One of my favorite websites/blogs is Simple Green Smoothies. I have been following them for a couple of years now.
Four times a year they have a FREE 30 day green smoothie challenge: drink a green smoothie once a day for 30 days and feel great! Sound simple? IT IS! In fact it is beyond simple to do. All the scary guess work has been figured out for you! Once a week you are emailed a shopping list and new tasty recipes to make. Making smoothies is not new for me – I have been making them or buying them for years. I tried a few times to make a green one. Sometimes they would turn out good, but more often than not they would be, well, let’s say “less than my best.” The great thing about Simple Green Smoothie is they give you a really simple formula to follow, to create the perfect green smoothie!
So sometimes (most times) I use one of their recipes. But I also like to experiment. Like this Tropical Green Bean Smoothie and this Fresh and Sassy Green Smoothie.
This smoothie is really just a twisted re-creation of one of my favorite summertime treats: Spicy Jalapeno, Honeydew and Cucumber Ice-Pops. I LOVE this flavor combination and I have to say it is even BETTER with the addition of spinach and coconut water!
Cucumber and icy cold honeydew melon are both so bright and fresh tasting! The spinach and coconut water are both sweet without being heavy, and are perfect to balance the heat of the jalapeño. The lime is the finishing touch that brings it home. This is really one of the best Green Smoothies I have ever had. …and I have had a lot of green smoothies!
SIDE NOTE:
I read cookbooks cover to cover just like novels. If you are like me and are looking for a new cookbook “novel” I highly recommend this cook book! It was fun to read and the recipes are delicious!
Fresh and SASSY Green Smoothie: Spinach, Jalapeno, Honeydew, Lime and Cucumber
Ingredients
- 3 Cups fresh baby spinach
- 2 Cups honeydew melon Cubed - frozen is best.
- 1 Cup cucumber
- 1 lime zest and juice
- 1 jalapeño pepper Remove the seeds and the white veins on the inside. START with 1/2 the jalapeño and move up to whole if you can take the heat!
- 1 1/2 Cups coconut water
- Pinch flake sea salt
Instructions
- Here is a trick I learned from Simple Green Smoothies: start building your blender with the greens on the bottom!
- My blender is a thing of greatness. I know that not all blenders are created equal though, so here is another tip I picked up from SGS: blend the greens and the liquid first and then add all other ingredients and blend again - this will help you have a "Smooth" Smoothie.
- With this smoothie I like to add a tiny pinch of really flaky sea salt to the top. I think it really pops the lime. This is optional.
- YUM! You can see the tiny sea salt flakes on the top of my smoothie.
- This recipe will make two servings. Share, or save the second serving to drink tomorrow!
I have been making green smoothies for a short while and really like them. My base is a green powder and I add banana, and coconut water. This recipe sounds so much better I will definitely try it. Love your recipes.
What do you like the blender are you using? I will be making this tomorrow for breakfast! Thanks for the tip.
